The Hong Kong Triathlong group are in town (25 of 'em) and they're having a Olympic distance race this Friday afternoon at 3pm.

The race will include - 1.5km swim, ride around the Lake (40km) and then 10km run up and down the edges of the Lake.

If anyone wants to race or volunteer shoot me an email at bevancolless@gmail.com

There are a range of different levels competing so if you've ever wanted to have a crack at a triathlon this is a good chance to give it a go cheaply and in a relaxed environment.

If Japan actually granted people born here citizenship, then "zainichi" players like Jong Tae Sae "The People's Rooney" might have been playing for Japan.
Bigger picture in sight for local development
Architect devises plan for 'rehab' of famed upscale Niseko-Hirafu ski resort community

ORIGINAL ARTICLE (http://search.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/fl20100605a1.html)

By ROB GILHOOLY
Special to The Japan Times

For some it was a flash in the pan, at best an experiment destined to fail, at worst a mini-bubble hyper-inflated by greedy "outsiders" with little interest other than the type accumulating in the bank.

For others, however, the Niseko ski resort in southwest Hokkaido is much more than just a picturesque snow globe waiting to be smashed. A criticism often leveled at Niseko's real estate boom that started around eight years ago is that it has lacked planning and long-term vision, with some developments showing little concern for building codes or the local environment.

If Italo-Australian architect, designer and master planner Riccardo Tossani has his way, all of this is about to change. "We're seeing a shift in the type of force that is developing this area," says Tossani at his second home in the village of Hirafu, which he terms "the nexus of the area's social activities."

This has The Kutchannel's full support:

PETITION FOR HIRAFU-ZAKA REDEVELOPMENT (http://www.petition.fm/petitions iseko/)

Thanks to Ezo Seafoods, NISADE, NPC, Powderlife and all the others for bringing it to my attention.

Here's Powderlife's spread on the original plan that is now getting scaled back: http://www.powderlife.com ews iseko-news/hirafu-main-street-makeover-road (http://www.powderlife.com ews iseko-news/hirafu-main-street-makeover-road).

EzoSan's post is here: http:/ iseko.kutchannel.net/en ews/5-news/322-hirafu-zaka-issues (http:/ iseko.kutchannel.net/en ews/5-news/322-hirafu-zaka-issues)

This could be a chance to make Niseko-Hirafu a boom town once more. Beyond just securing funding, I think the input of all stakeholders here is critical. Foreign, Japanese, corporate, indy. Doesn't matter, you have a voice, use it. Sign the petition and let's get that loot.

News to me. Will that be the third one, then?

Speaking of transportation, though, I definitely think there's room for a decent taxi service in Hirafu... seems woefully under-served by the clowns in Kutchan.

Unsolicited Feedback
Volume 2: Crabs in a Barrel

The size of the resort, a pie that is no longer growing like it used to, and the proximity of all these similar companies in such a small village, make many transactions a zero-sum game. Real estate, accommodation, rafting, you name it, somebody's competing with you for those yen.

This makes things a bit cliquish, am I right? I admit it, I've been guilty of this myself. I've had some friends who, through my actions or theirs, became competitors. That puts a strain on any friendship, which is regrettable. Competition leads to putting distance between each other, which is hard in a village with only several hundred people!

Healthy competition is good though, can't argue with that. The guests and investors benefit from it, just not sure how much us locals do. I will say this: I love originality. Big ideas and new ideas. If you have the opportunity to create something, go for it man! Good for you. Good for the resort.

And if it succeeds... people will be riding YOUR coattails ;) guaranteed.

It is good to see people wanting to learn the language and experience the culture. I think local companies should require their foreign staff to take classes, and I'm pretty sure there'd be a business opportunity in that too for an enterprising group of locals. It would go a long way towards helping integrate the resort with Kutchan, win-win all around.

I like the bike idea. A lot. A client once suggested to me that they should have a "Niseko Chrome Week"... not sure how much chrome they put on rice rockets though. Could be huge.

What are the alternative camping venues? Doubt Alpen would allow bikers to storm their parking lot and use their bathrooms for a few days. Sturgis in America is HUGE. Niseko could easily be Japan's Sturgis.

not going to happen

it is well documented that the Japanese police are corrupt and inept. add lazy to the list, which I think is the real problem here in hirafu. The only time people EVER get arrested in kutchan is when the Feds show up to bust the smokers.

truth be told, as a former underage drinker, i prefer the status-quo to the smell of bacon and a quasi police state.

I love Cocoro's scrumptious modanyaki (okonomiyaki with yakisoba)　- とても　おいちい　ですね！
They also make the best hot chocolate ever!!!
Did you know that there is already a group on FB for Cocoro (but maybe not a profile)...

And the snowboard theives are out there too. One of our guests had a kid's board stolen two days ago. I didn't get all the details, but apparently he left it outside with everyone else's, and his is the only one that was taken (his was also the only non-rental board). I told them to get me a full description of the board and I'd pass on the details, but they haven't gotten back to me yet.

Snow and shorts don't mix.
Snow and T-shirts don't mix except in Spring or when you're shovelin hard.
Wish snow and idiots didn't mix either and we'd all be having better times.
Maybe it's just a Queensland thing - they are a bit different or is sloooooooooooooooooooow- maybe they don't know that snow is cold.
Maybe there should be special beanies given out to all QLDers -that way everyone could keep an eye on em.
Heating/Air conditioning in Japan - yeah we all know it isn't logical, just be prepared to strip/add a layer and you'll be sweet.

I'd rather pull out my own fingernails than navigate Kutchan's town homepage trying to find this year's schedule and route map. So...

...generally: runs from 6ish to 11:30ish, going back and forth between Hirafu and Kutchan. The main Hirafu stop is across from NOASC (newly covered this year... good call!) and there's another one down in Izumikyo II in the big parking lot by the management center.

Get into Kutchan, support the nightlife down there, and get home safe. For free. Rockin.

On the note of fires caused by ill-maintained wood burning stoves and glowing white-hot kerosene stoves thoughtlessly placed near children and curtains throughout Hokkaido, I humbly present to the people of Japan a little White Man's Magic called... Central Heating (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_heating). Yes. It can be used in buildings smaller than middle schools. Shocking.

the NWGA is an excellent idea in theory- the problem is to be a member requires certification and language skills beyond most potential guides in the area- yet there is a demand in the area for English language guiding, hence a black or grey market.
Japan is a country that requires 11 seperate certs, before you can become an aerobics intsructor, so one can imagine the efforts required to become an alpine guide. All power to those that do and they should be at the top of the ladder in terms of guiding and decision making- however there numbers are simply unable to keep up with demand.
Expanding the governing body to include all ski schools and those operating as guides, and banishing those without a mutually agreed level of certifcation would be a big first step in removing these dangerous operators on the mountain.
SkiJapan for example does a good job of enforcing its instructors to stay on course and obey resorts rules within lessons- they and others like them should be rewarded with a clear cut definition of their operation parameters. Guides like Pro Powder - that are NWGA members- should be able to operate in an arena where "scabs" aren`t undermining their qualifications by operating without having done the leg work.

One governing body- expanded somewhat- that encompasses and grandfather clauses those operating now and sets standards
and business practices for the future is the best way to ensure niseko grows into the resort it is meant to become and that everyone that puts their efforts in here are rewarded with the ability to support themselves and develop their community.

I'd give up on the bus option, seems like too much work, but you can get here and back on a train, just one transfer in Oshamanbe. A car is really the best option, usually takes 3 hours, but you can probably cut 30 minutes off of that if you use the Hokkaido Expressway.

For those of you who don't know yet, the Hokkaido Expressway (道央自動車道) was recently extended from Kuromatsunai all the way past Yakumo. Sweeeeet. Really gonna miss driving through Oshamanbe and Yakumo, let me tell ya.

Accommodation options:
- Goryokaku Dormy Inn (http://www.hotespa.net/hotels/goryoukaku/) usually has sub-5000 deals that come with breakfast. Call and ask.
- Smile Hotel (http://www.smile-hotels.com/hakodate.html) is closer to the station, a little inconvenient if you plan to drink all night in Goryokaku (and why wouldn't you) but usually cheaper. sub-4000 range.
- Hokkei Club (http://www.hokke.co.jp/0110/) and Nets Hakodate (http://www.hotelnets.co.jp/) are two other hotels that sometimes have deals under 6000 but otherwise charge 8-9000 nightly. Hokkei has a solid rep, Nets is newer, would like to hear some feedback on it.
- Bit nicer: we can definitely recommend Hakodate Bay La Vista (http://www.hotespa.net/hotels/lahakodate/) and Nagisatei Yunokawa Prince Hotel (http:/ agisatei.info/english_new/indexEn.html), both have rocking onsen, the latter provides one in your room.
- Goryokaku Park (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/de/Goryokaku_fort_retouched_20060814-001.jpg) is awesomely cold, probably closed at night, and haunted by thousands lof slain rebels. Give it a go, don't blame me for any resulting legal or mental issues.
- If you really want to sleep in your car: find an all-night parking lot, there's a few around Goryokaku. This one might work (http://maps.google.co.jp/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=&sll=41.7912,140.751826&sspn=0.001976,0.004823&gl=jp&brcurrent=3,0x5f9ef4702bec2929:0x95b94f383ff81ef4,0,0x5f9ef4702b9fa4af:0xbe86398738e1d4d3&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=&ll=41.791115,140.75182&spn=0,359.997589&z=19&layer=c&cbll=41.7912,140.751826&panoid=autMaojd9reSOTP_qhdEKg&cbp=12,251.83,,0,6.2), there are others. Don't count on street parking, but the savvy amongst you may find it.

We also rasied more money for avalanche research, and education than any other venue..90,000yen! Niseko is and should be leading the way in Hokkaido. If anyone wants a vid, we will be selling them for the charity price of 2000yen and it really is a must have video. Very good extra features too.

There is a meeting at NOASC (River base) this Sunday 5:30pm for persons interested in having their kids play Rugby Union, next year. Persons who are keen to help with coaching and other club activities, are also invited to attend the meeting.

Two representatives from the Hokkaido Rugby Association will be present at the meeting, so all your questions should be able to be answered.

It is anticipated that, Rugby training will be held on the fields next to the Kutchan pool one afternoon through the week, and on a Sunday morning for the kids, for starters. The initial goals for all players will be fitness, individual skills, understanding the rules of the game, and lots of fun. As the kids develop, more team play, and strategies can be taught to them.

There will be several mini games held in Otaru (mainly) or Sapporo (Jozankei) through out a season starting in April and ending in October. I expect several teams to also travel to Kutchan, or Hirafu to play some practice games throughout the season. I am also hoping to have some extra practice sessions with schools and club teams that come to Hirafu on Rugby camps throughout summer.

Kids rugby is played with decreased numbers per side, 5, 7, 9 persons, etc, and my philosophy is the everyone gets to play and have fun. The kids have to wear head gear and use a mouth guard. There is a tag rugby (touch) league and a normal league. The Japanese system is based off the Australian system, with some rule changes.

With regards to who plays with limited numbers, the kids that come to training are considered first. When the team, as a team decides to try and win, then the more skilled players may get more time on the field, as compared to others. The main goal as kids is having fun.

I expect to be able to take the kids to and from these games in one of NOASC’s 25 seater buses.

If you are interested in helping or having your children play please attend.

Thanks,

Ross Carty.

Niseko Touch Rugby 2009

Sep 29, 2009

On what can only be described as a spectacular day, the Niseko Powder Pigs Rugby Club set out to try to wrestle the title back from the invading hordes from Sapporo alongside the challengers from all over Hokkaido.

The games, played at Korropokoro fields with an outstanding view of Yotei, were fast and entertaining. The first round saw the mighty Powder Pigs 1 fall to the Pigs 2 while the Sapporo White Fright dispatched the team made of English teachers from around Hokkaido .

The second round was even more intense, as the winners of these matches went on to the finals. Again the Powder Pigs 1 came up short, this time to the Sapporo team again, While the JETS were handled by the PowderPigs 2.

The Final Round

The Powder Pigs 1 faced the JETS ina battle to avoid the wooden spoon, and thanks to a couple of late recruits, managed to edge out a 5 tries to 2 win.

The stage was then set for the Grand Final. Would the age and experience of the veteran Powder Pigs 2 hold off the young legs and pace of the Sapporo interlopers? Would the trophy finally rest on Niseko ground? Would Craig Miekle`s lungs actually explode during the game? These questions and many more waited to be answered.

The game began quickly , with the PP2 jumping out to a quick lead, thanks to some quick counter play and the quick legs of the young Englishman Mike Robertson and a brilliant intercept by Rett Roylance. The White Fright of Sapporo , lead by the playmaking of Barney Lee and the running of Toby Washer, struck back at the stroke of half time and the game was knotted heading into the second half.

The Sapporo boys jumped out to a quick lead and seemed to have the gavm well in hand until a couple of costly errors and mental mistakes put the game back on level as time expired. Sudden Death overtime!

The pace and intensity of the game was now showing on the faces of the Niseko team and despite a few valiant charges to the line, the gaps finally appeared and Johnny Silieli broke through for the game decider. The wee tanuki returned to his Sapporo home for another long winter while the Niseko teams once again sulked home to lick their wounds and plot their revenge next year.

Big thanks to Niseko Pizza for putting on such a great after match spread, the JET players that travelled from all across Hokkaido , and the fans and family that came out to support on such a perfect day.
